Having won seven consecutive home games before today, the Portland Pirates (Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate) took on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins affiliate) in Portland in Game 3 of the AHL’s Eastern Conference Finals. The Pirates beat the Penguins 5-2 to extend this streak to eight games and now hold a 2-1 series lead.
The Penguins scored first on the power play on a Mark Ardelan shot, deflected in front by Pirates defensemen, and went over Pirates goaltender Mike McKenna at 10:05. Assists on the goal went to Ben Lovejoy and Connor James.
Portland tied the game on a power play at 4:43. Bobby Ryan scored on a rebound to put the shot past Sean Curry. Assists went to Geoff Platt and Stephan Dixon.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took the lead again at 10:43 when former Pirate Tim Brent tipped a shot from the point past McKenna. For the second time in the game, the Pirates cashed in on the power play from a goal by Geoff Platt at 12:15. Platt’s slap shot found its way over the shoulder of Curry to tie the game at 2.
The Pirates would strike again at 14:57, when Jason King broke the tie and gave Portland a 3-2 lead. Assists on Platt’s goal came from Andrew Ebbett and Bret Festerling.
In the third period at 12:54, the Pirates took a 4-2 lead on a Stephen Dixon goal. Geoff Platt and Bobby Ryan were credited with assists. Later in the period, on an empty net, Simon Ferguson tapped home a goal to give the Pirates the 5-2 win.
Mike McKenna of the Portland Pirates had 27 saves, while Penguins goaltender John Curry made 24 saves.
